Revolutionizing Direct Targeted Therapy

Biologics have revolutionized the management of severe and uncontrolled  asthma, atopic dermatitis, chronic urticaria, and nasal polyps. These medications primarily target specific components of the immune system that contribute to chronic airway inflammation. They have demonstrated remarkable efficacy in reducing asthma issues, improving lung function, and enhancing overall quality of life for individuals with severe severe allergic conditions.

  • Xolair (omalizumab) works for severe asthma by blocking a protein called IgE that triggers allergic responses in the airways, helping to reduce asthma symptoms.
  • Dupixent, a biologic drug for severe asthma and atopic dermatitis. Targets IL-4 and IL-13 to reduce inflammation and allergic response.
  • Fasenra, a biologic medication for severe eosinophilic asthma. Binds to IL-5 to decrease eosinophils and airway inflammation.

  • What are allergies?

Allergies are an abnormal immune response to substances that are typically harmless to most people. When individuals with allergies come into contact with allergens (such as pollen, dust mites, pet dander, or certain foods), their immune system reacts by producing antibodies called immunoglobulin E (IgE). This immune response can cause symptoms such as sneezing, itching, runny nose, watery eyes, hives, or in severe cases, difficulty breathing.

  • What are the most common allergens?

The most common allergens include pollen (from trees, grasses, and weeds), dust mites, mold spores, pet dander (from cats, dogs, or other animals), insect stings, certain foods (such as peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, wheat, soy, fish, and shellfish), and certain medications (such as penicillin or other antibiotics).

  • When should I seek treatment for allergies?

Seek treatment for allergies if you experience persistent or bothersome symptoms that affect your daily life, if your symptoms worsen over time, if you have severe allergic reactions, if over-the-counter medications are ineffective, if allergies disrupt your sleep, or if symptoms persist year-round. Consult with a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and personalized treatment plan.

  • What is allergy-induced asthma?

Allergy-induced asthma, also known as allergic asthma, is a type of asthma triggered by exposure to allergens such as pollen, dust mites, pet dander, or mold. When individuals with allergic asthma come into contact with these allergens, it can lead to inflammation and narrowing of the airways, causing symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness.

  • When should I seek medical attention for asthma symptoms?

It is important to seek medical attention for asthma symptoms if you experience frequent or persistent wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, or chest tightness. Additionally, if your symptoms worsen or are not well-controlled despite using prescribed medications, it is recommended to consult with a healthcare professional for further evaluation and adjustment of your treatment plan.

  • What are biologics?

Biologics are a type of medication that are derived from living organisms, such as humans, animals, or microorganisms. In the context of allergy and asthma healthcare, biologics refer to a specific class of medications that target and modulate the immune system to treat allergic conditions like asthma, allergic rhinitis, and chronic urticaria.

  • How do biologics work in treating allergy and asthma?

Biologics for allergy and asthma work by targeting specific components of the immune system that are involved in the allergic response. They are designed to block or inhibit the action of certain immune cells or signaling molecules, such as immunoglobulin E (IgE), interleukins, or specific receptors. By doing so, biologics help reduce inflammation, control allergic reactions, and improve asthma symptoms.

  • What causes atopic dermatitis

The exact cause of atopic dermatitis is unknown, but it is believed to involve a combination of genetic and environmental factors. People with atopic dermatitis may have a dysfunctional skin barrier, making their skin more susceptible to irritants, allergens, and moisture loss. Additionally, immune system dysregulation and an overactive immune response contribute to the development of the condition.

  • What are common triggers for atopic dermatitis flare-ups?

The triggers for atopic dermatitis can vary from person to person, but common triggers include irritants (such as soaps, detergents, certain fabrics), allergens (such as pollen, pet dander, dust mites), changes in temperature or humidity, emotional stress, sweating, certain foods, and skin infections.

  • How do I schedule a telemedicine appointment?

We now offer telemedicine visits to provide remote care and minimize the need for in-person appointments during the ongoing COVID-19 situation. This service allows patients to receive care from the comfort of their homes, reducing the need to visit our office.

Telemedicine visits are currently available on a limited basis with Dr. Sanka, Dr. Chamarthy, and Melissa Swertfeger, APRN, from Monday to Friday. Appointments can be scheduled by contacting our office. This service aims to ensure continuity of care for patients and offers convenience, particularly for families facing school closures and remote work situations

  • What safety measures are in place at your practice during COVID-19?

Masks are required by nurses and providers providing direct patient care at Advanced Allergy and Asthma Care. Masks are optional for visitors. Even though many of our providers and staff members are fully vaccinated, we are following CDC guidance.

As a larger portion of the population becomes vaccinated we all look forward to the day that we can reduce the current rules about mask wearing in the physicians office.
